Note: The page has been relocated to http://www.nointrigue.com/wiki/Notes/First_year. See that page for the most up-to-date version.

This page contains notes and materials from my first year of study at the University of Sydney doing combined science/law. The following courses are covered:

MATH1901 Differential Calculus

Differential Calculus is a first-year science course at the University of Sydney that lays the foundation for further studies in both pure and applied mathematics.

Resource Type Versions

MATH1901 Notes
Contains a summary of key concepts introduced in the course

Notes

SOFT1901 Software Development 1

Software Development 1 is a first-year course at the University of Sydney that introduces basic programming concepts, in particular, in terms of Java. Its practical component included a group assignment, which is available in downloads > soft1901 project.

Resource Type Versions

Assignment 1 Testing Report
Testing report for the "Bank" assignment that shows normal, boundary and illegal cases.

Report

Assignment 2 Draft Acceptance Report
Draft acceptance report for the group assignment that outlined what the group expected the project to achieve by the final presentation.

Report

Assignment 2 Testing Report
Testing report for the group asignment that outlined test cases and results of tests.

Report

Assignment X (Integrated Development Environment) IDE Report
Report on NetBeans IDE 3.6, including its uses, features and shortfalls.

Report

Assignment 2 Poster
Poster to accompany the group assignment that discusses the aims, structure and result of the project, and includes screenshots and pretty photos.

TSP Water Project

Each year, the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney organises a first-year project that brings all the schools in the faculty under a common theme. In 2004, the theme was "Water", and as part of the Mathematics group, I investigated fractals, in particular, the creation of snowflakes.

Resource Type Versions

Growing Snowflakes using Diffusion Limited Aggregation (DLA)
My individual presentation that discusses the program that I wrote to produce snowflakes using DLA, as well as empirical analysis on the snowflakes produced by the program.

Presentation

Snowflakes and Fractals
The group report on snowflakes and fractals that discusses the different ways in which snowflakes can be created, as well as mathematical theory underpinning fractals.
Credit: Thomas Clement, Julian Gibbons, Jeff Gordon, Enoch Lau, Ozan Onay, John Sun

Report

Final Presentation
The presentation that was delivered at the TSP night, and is a more user-friendly version of the above report (it included animations, but these have been excluded due to their size)
Credit: Thomas Clement, Julian Gibbons, Jeff Gordon, Enoch Lau, Ozan Onay, John Sun, presented by Julian and Enoch

LAWS1010 Torts

Torts is a first-year law course at the University of Sydney, and it's the first course in which "real" law is studied after Foundations of Law. Torts is about civil wrongs that society recognises, where one person may bring an action against another. It encompasses such things as trespass and negligence.

Resource Type Versions

Torts Assignment
The compulsory assignment that was undertaken during the torts course

Assignment

Class Test
Contains exemplar responses for each of the questions in the class test

Exam

MATH1005 Statistics

Statistics is a first-year science course at the University of Sydney.

Resource Type Versions

MATH1005 Notes
Contains a summary of key concepts introduced in the course

Notes

MATH1903 Integral Calculus and Modelling

Integral Calculus and Modelling is a first-year science course at the University of Sydney that extends upon the principles learnt in differential calculus.

Resource Type Versions

MATH1903 Notes
Contains a summary of key concepts introduced in the course

Notes

SOFT1902 Software Development 2

Software Development 2 is a first-year course at the University of Sydney that extends upon the first semester course. Once again, it includes a group project, which is available at downloads > soft1902 project.

Resource Type Versions

Ethics Report
Report that discusses the issues surrounding information access, and explains how the project attempts to address those concerns.
Credit: Matthew Chen, Joshua Green, Enoch Lau, Andrew Meares

Report

Scalability Report
Report that discusses the runtime complexity of various components of the system, and compares empirical and theoretical results.
Credit: Matthew Chen, Joshua Green, Enoch Lau, Andrew Meares

Report

Testing Report
Report that outlines unit testing performed on my part of the project.

PHYS1902 Physics 1B

Physics 1B is a first-year science course at the University of Sydney. For students in the Talented Students Program (TSP), part of the practical component of the course could be replaced by research project with researchers at the School of Physics. Together with Barry and Grace, I did a project entitled "Hide and Seek: The Search for High Redshift Galaxies".

Resource Type Versions

TSP Report
The report on my section of the project, investigating the probability of finding high redshift galaxies when certain parameters were altered.

Notes

TSP Presentation
The presentation from everyone in the group that explains the concept of redshift, characteristics of high redshift galaxies, and parameters that were investigated.
